Government announces the development of the new Work Health and Safety Bill

The new Work Health and Safety Bill for WA, is in development, as announced by the

Government on the 12th July, it will be based on the national Work Health and Safety Act.

The new, modernised Bill aims to bring Western Australia more in line with the rest of Australia and provide primary legislation for workplace safety and health across all WA Industries.

Minister for Mines and Petroleum, and Commerce and industrial Relations, Bill Johnson, confirmed that “Occupational, health and safety legislation in WA is 30 years old and is out of date”.  “This is why we are taking action, the new Bill is an important step in updating and improving the regulation of workplace health and safety.”

The modernised bill will replace three acts :-

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1974
  • Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994, and
  • Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Safety Levies Act 2011.

The development of the new Work Health and Safety Bill invovle extensive consultation with stakeholders and community prior to introduction to Parliament.
